A Manaus school since 1988

Colégio Palas Atena was founded on November 21, 1988 by teacher Ruivete Maria de Abreu Machado. Nearly four decades educating students in the same city.

How long has Palas Atena been in Manaus?

Since November 21, 1988, when teacher Ruivete Maria de Abreu Machado founded the school in the Adrianópolis district.

Nearly four decades educating students in the same city. What changed over that time was the reach: the address, the number of grade levels, the arrival of the bilingual program and of the international network. What did not change was the intention written into the founding document, to form creative, engaged, critical and autonomous people.

What happened along the way

1988

Founded on November 21 by teacher Ruivete Maria de Abreu Machado, in memoriam, at Rua Sete, Quadra D, Conjunto Vila Municipal, in the Adrianópolis district. She remained as president and head of school until 2014, supported by other members of the family.

1989

Authorized to operate by Ruling 130/89 of the Amazonas State Board of Education. The school opens with classes from 1st through 6th grade, today 1st through 7th.

1998

First move, to Rua Recife, 2357, in the Flores district, driven by the need for a space that could better hold students, teachers and staff.

2000

Fundamental and Ensino Médio are now complete: from the literacy year through 8th grade, and the three years of high school. Today that is 1st through 9th grade, and the three high school years.

2007

Second move, to Rua Manoel Marques de Souza, 256, in Parque Dez de Novembro, for the same reason: space.

2008

Educação Infantil opens, from Maternal through Jardim II, ages two to five. The journey now starts earlier.

2012

The full-day schedule begins, in line with article 34 of the LDB, the Brazilian education framework law, brought in gradually and always by the family’s choice.

Today

Back in Adrianópolis, on Avenida Umberto Calderaro. From Educação Infantil through Ensino Médio, with a bilingual program from preschool to 9th grade, and part of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network. Led by Paulo Ribeiro.
