Palas Atena is a truly bilingual school because English is the means through which the child learns about the world, not one more subject on the timetable.

There is an enormous difference between studying English and living in English. Many schools teach the language in a few lessons a week. Here the language is in the routines, the games, the projects and the everyday conversations, from Educação Infantil through 9th grade.

How far does the bilingual program go, and why is that a strength?

The bilingual program runs from Educação Infantil through 9th grade, and that is precisely its strength: every year of childhood and early adolescence immersed in the language.

We would rather be straight about it. The bilingual program at Palas covers Educação Infantil, Fundamental I and Fundamental II, through 9th grade. That is not a little, it is the opposite. It is the stage when a child learns languages best, lived entirely inside English.

By the time they reach Ensino Médio, students bring a solid bilingual base with them, one that supports preparation for universities in Brazil and abroad. The fluency is not lost, it becomes a tool for taking on the world.

The High Five system gives each student five books: Language, PBL, CLIL, Design Book and Story Time. Each month the class works through a unit and closes it with a project. That is what gives English real substance instead of one lesson a week.

Through which grade does the Palas Atena bilingual program run?

The bilingual program runs from Educação Infantil through 9th grade, the end of Fundamental II. That is every year of a child’s formation immersed in English, which builds a solid base they carry into Ensino Médio and into life.

Can my child adapt to English immersion?

Yes, and more easily than parents expect. The earlier a child lives alongside a second language, the more natural the learning, because a young brain takes languages in lightly. Immersion at Palas is gradual and welcoming, and respects the pace of each student.

Does English immersion get in the way of learning Portuguese?

No. Living in two languages strengthens reasoning, reading and writing in both. Bilingual children develop more mental flexibility and focus, and go on commanding Portuguese just as deeply, now with the whole world within reach.
